Excellent advice, and a lot of it can apply to "regular" fiction writing too.

Fanfic writers do sometimes change the characters, even settings but these are stories that sometimes resurface as original works. If you want to stay true to the original, the characters can be doing and saying very different things than in the original work but the motives have to be consistent. Not so unlike real life, when you think about it.

I am a fanfiction writer, and I must say I agree with all of this- although it is fun to make a nice character mean every once in a while. I could say that my skills are polished, but that would ruin the fun!

That was very helpful, thank you! I've been a fanfiction writer for a long time but I still found lots of these rules helpful. :D

Not to undermine, or disrespect fanfic, but you can definitely apply the same principles of fanfic, to other forms of story telling, which can help if you want your fans to write their own fanfic of your works.

Deborah,

Thanks so much for the kudos! I sincerely appreciate it. Sometimes when you outline "rules" on anything, you run the risk of stepping on toes or someone finding fault with what you've written. Knowing that a fellow "shipper" agrees with me does my heart good! :)

And I agree: writing fanfic is a great place to test yourself for creating your own characters, plots, and stories. Sort of like the shoot-around before the basketball game!

Thanks again!

This is great. I've been writing fanfiction for years, and this is the first time I've seen it outlined so well.

Writers, fanfiction is a great place to test plot and character development. It's a great place to polish your skills and a great place to get positive feedback. But never EVER forget your serious writing!
