6 Non-Writing Blogs You Should be Reading

So we all know that reading makes us better writers. And that it should, so devour those words like fresh-baked donuts.
Avoid the Sugar Rush
Mmm… Good stuff. But be careful. You know what happens when you overload your sweet tooth, right? The sugar rush hits and it hits hard. And sooner or later, those donuts lose appeal.
This often happens when you read “about writing” too much. We read and read about it because we want to improve badly. Who can blame us?
Now, I realize the irony here. I’m writing about tempering your reading about writing by writing about it on a blog about writing.
That whole thought makes me dizzy, but what I’m saying is that you should always scan the horizon for inspiration, ideas and the possibility of finding like-minded folks who can support your goals.
Start with These Blogs and Vary Your Diet
Fuel Your Creativity – Another blog in the Fuel Brand network, full of tools, tips and insights from creative people. If you haven’t check it out yet, do so.
lluminated Mind – Geared toward building the kind of life you really want, this blog’s author has a great approach and feisty writing style. Created by Jonathan Mead, Illuminated Mind gives your “normal” approach to life a kick in the butt. You’ll find strategies on how to be a better you.
Lateral Action – Built on the finding the intersection between productivity and creativity, this blog explores many useful topics for writers. There’s a lot on creativity, so soak it up.
PostSecret – I know PostSecret is a popular blog. I just think it’s brilliant. Secrets illuminated with visuals and text on postcards. I love using it as a place to jump start my thinking about issues or characters I want to write about.
The Big Picture – Who doesn’t like big pictures? This blog is a part of the Boston Globe’s website and tells news stories with photographs. It’s a excellent place to go for some inspiration, ideas or a needed break from putting pen to paper.
Craziest Gadgets – This is a neat blog about the latest and greatest gadgets. I like it because it’s very future-orientated with many of the profiles on gadgets that push the boundaries of what has been seen before. It puts your mind in a different place than the present at times. This, as you know, is extremely helpful when writing.
These are just a few selections. Also, watch this blog for posts that relate to writing, but aren’t about the mechanics of it.
I know there’s more great content out there that helps motivate and inspire writers, so don’t forget to add your favorite.
