James,

Your post is brilliant, as usual, thanks so much for your contribution here.

I have collected and trashed rejection letters galore, but have also been pleasantly surprised by a gentle nod from an editor/publisher. Ah, when it rains, it pours, doesn't it?

In other words, quite a few of my pieces have seen the light of day. Nothing to beat the joy of seeing your name in print if you happen to be a creative person.

However, don't sit on your laurels. Keep on trying. Persevere and never give up.

And shoot for the stars. Even if you fall short, you will land gently on a soft, puffy cloud.

Great advice. Collecting rejections has to be part of every writer's routine at some point. And the tip about finding the newer lit journals on the lookout for new work and new writers is so true. I'm going to link to this from my blog.

Ever since reading On Writing by Stephen King, I've wanted to hammer a nail into my own wall and pin up rejection letters. If you're not getting them, you're someone really likes your work or you're not pursuing your goal to get published.

Thanks for a great article James! This is completely me, my fear of rejection completely overrides the logic that I'll never be published unless I submit my work! Thanks for these excellent ways to overcome that. I especially like the idea of making it a goal to receive rejections. That way every rejection gets you closer to that target of 10 per month, or whatever it might be, and therefore doesn't feel like a rejection at all.

Thanks again!
