I enjoyed this article, Giselle! I could identify with much of what you were saying and could feel your sense of accomplishment when you knew you were hitting the story true. “..a story I was proud to say I wrote.”

Also to Lauren B. Davis: Your response to this post most welcome (to me, anyway! HAHAH) I think everyone who wants to write should have this tattooed on the back of their hand so they see it every day:

Pushing through…doubts and coming out on the other side with new understanding is the mark of a true writer.

I would also add that this is true for ANY endeavor.

Hello Lauren,
Thank you for your comments. During the course, I wish I had addressed my worries, concerns and fears. But I was too proud to admit them. Now, I have a better understanding and admiration for the knowledge and guidance you awarded me.

Vinnie is back on the forefront. Through re-visiting his story, the premise for this article came to mind. Once I am finished editing the story I will begin the submission process.

I appreciate all the work you have done as a mentor, and writer. I hope when I decide to take the Creative Writing course again, we are paired up. I promise to update you on what happens to Vinnie.

Dear Giselle,
I too have alot of ideas bubbling within my mind, but ‘am hesitant to give them in writing. I often voice my ideas in my class rooms(I’m teaching in a college) and don’t feel like writing them . Your experience is certainly an ice breaker and it has given me confidence to sound the strange thoughts that come to my mind. Thank you, Giselle.

You’ve expertly expressed how all writers feel. Whether we are accomplished or just beginning OR whether we are published super stars or just write for ourselves that strong sense of self-doubt plagues us. Our family and friends tend to try to make us feel better but I, as you, have learned more and grown due to honest feedback from experts that wasn’t intended to boost my ego but intended to push my boundaries and the result was always better writing.

I just may look into that writing program myself.

Dear Giselle,

I’m still proud of you, and more than that — I’m delighted to see you’ve continued with your writing.

I am, however, unhappy to think my comments on your work caused “a rift,” as you call it, in your confidence. I wish you had shared your feelings with me at the time so that I might have addressed them. The truth is that all writers (if they’re honest) feel that sort of doubt in their talents and purpose from time to time. Heck, I go through it a dozen times with each new work. Pushing through those doubts and coming out on the other side with new understanding is the mark of a true writer. On the other hand, the work of an editor, or mentor, is to determine if the writer has met his or her intention and, if not, why not. Writing is indeed hard work, just like anything else that’s worth doing. You proved to yourself that you aren’t afraid of hard work. Congratulations!

And so, this blog begs the question – what’s happening with Vinnie? Have you continued work on that piece? Finished it? Sent it out to journals? And what are you working on now?
