I am not an editor or a writer, but your article was interesting! And I got some really good tips for the next time I need to translate something in to my own language... Sometimes it just feels impossible to translate some jokes or funny things, they do not sound that funny after translation. Not an easy work you do. :)

Hi Kirsty!

I am an American living in Riyadh. My husband has taught English in Saudi for 8 years and is now a Freelance editor. His speciality is editing translated text and he concurs with your observations.

Do you read, write, or speak Arabic? This has helped my husband (knowing Arabic) but the work can still be tedious.

Good points, not just for translation, but for any editing. As a video editor, I put a lot of these into practice everyday. Sometimes it's not about finding the right words, but finding the right "translation" to convey the underlying message; getting to the heart of the project.
