The personal stories of writers are indeed really inspiring. While the practical advice in King’s ‘On Writing’ is absolutely brilliant, I also love hearing about his life becoming a writer, and how he came back to it after his accident. Reading things like that really gets you going, you’re right!

Writing in crayon can be very liberating, anything that takes us back to our childhood is an excellent escape from the pressures of being an adult. Plus, it’s just plain fun!

Separating characters and plots with different colours is a great idea! Not only for fun, but also to help focus all the various strands of the story in your mind.

Nice post, man.

I often look to those I find inspiring when down — JK Rowling and Stephen King are always awesome writers to check in with and read about for inspiration. Not only is their work awe inspiring, but their personal stories get you going as well.

Oh, and I love the smell of crayons.

I love writing in Crayon, it sends me back to time when I didn’t worry about the adult world, and now writing with them reminds me that I shouldn’t… Too much.

Well this certainly puts things into perspective. When I find myself whining about not being able to write, all I need to do is imagine the major challenge this man face – I can’t even begin to imagine how anyone would be able to interpret a “blinking eye” – Wow!

Whenever I feel like quitting, I remind myself that it’s better to just rest for a bit than to quit. I also remind myself that if I don’t ever take the time to write, that’s a sure fire way to fail – I want to at least give myself a fighting chance, that means I’ve got to sit down and just do it. (I know all these cliche’s wrapped into one… sorry!)

I know that feeling of helplessness and self-consciousness all too well! Writing in different colors has often helped me actually, it helps separate out characters or plot aspects that just pop into my head as I write and take me away from my original plan. It also brings things to life and makes writing more fun, less serious and takes away some of the pressure for the first draft to be great.

I like the idea of using the three aspects of that quote to over come the barrier of a blank page though, thanks. Very useful tips!
