The Beauty of Going ‘Ghost’
My friend has a fashion empire. Her hot-or-not list can make or break you. With one small mention she can sell hundreds, nay, thousands of frilly pink tutus if she so desires. And you, mere civilian, can’t do anything to stop her… because you don’t know who she is.
With a major aspect of freelance writing being how to market yourself, it’s bold to write anonymously. It’s hard for people to contact you about a job when they don’t know who you are. However, so many writers ghost-pen for various publications. Fashion and ranting in particular seem to draw out those who wish to remain nameless. For those who like to role-play, you might find ghost-penning eroticism to be up your alley.
In a world so focused on personal branding it’s novel to find writers whose business’ not only benefit but depend on their anonymity. Let’s face it, ranting wouldn’t be the same if all of your friends knew whose birthday gift you hated. The believability of an anonymous writer’s candor is at the core of how that online persona is made and sustained. We have to think that they can say and do whatever they want.
Why people ghost pen or anonymously write may remain as mysterious as the author’s personality, but one thing’s for sure. Whatever their reasons are… it’s working. Some anonymous blogs have led to anonymous book deals, revenue checks to anonymous bank accounts and being ‘outed’ into anonymous fame.
So how can you generate some buzz around an anonymous you? Well, do an anonymous guest post on a friend’s blog or do an anonymous guest post on your own blog! Goand get out there. Let’s see what you come up with once you lose your inhibitions.

hmmm… I might have to try that. It’d be a good way to test a different voice or genre.
You’ve given me something to think about. (As if I need More work on my plate lol)
It is a great way to try out a new voice, and take a chance with your style. Go for it, and let us know how it went!
Wow. It`s really very nice idea. I think that i will use it on my blog- i don`t know how my audience will react on it :)
Well, great! It’s a perfect opportunity to test the waters and see what your readership responds to. Let us know how it goes!
I never thought about posting on my own blog… very tricky!! :)
That’s a unique idea. I’ve never been involved in Ghost Writing before but I’m starting to think that it might be a good idea. Thanks for planting the seeds of this idea in my head.
Nicholas, no problem! Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes ghost writing is a great way to stretch yourself, try on something new, or simply write that embarrassing story that you’re too shy to with your own name. Good luck, let us know how it goes!
Hrm… suppose one has quite a bit of experience with anonymity? How would one cop to that as an authority, without violating that anonymity? Hypothetical question of course…
Well, certainly letting others know what you’ve experienced as a ghost writer wouldn’t reveal any specifics about for whom or where you did such writing. I can tell you right now that I’ve ghost written – but that still doesn’t tell you where or under what circumstances. If you have tips and tricks… by all means, share!
It would be cool to try this out with a story I’ve been wanting to write. Hehe, an anonymous frame story…fun times…
Corey, go for it!
LOVE the idea of posting on your own blog, but as someone else! :D
I love it too. I love it because it keeps the idea of being a ‘ghost writer’ about building an alter-ego of sorts. Writing ghost isn’t about hiding, but about freeing yourself up to possibly play devils advocate, or generate some interesting conversation.
I like the idea here. How many of us get stuck trying to be “us” the writer, or worse, “us” – the writer we want to be?
This lets you just write. That is a very freeing thing!
